Trudy - you could get a Free School Report from many sites on the net. Look for crime data, attendance at schools etc etc. This should give you some data that you can base your area/location decision upon. Most Realtors have FREE Data like this on their websites...Hope this helps!

A "good time" to buy will depend on your circumstances. In order to get an answer to the second part of your question, I would check and the local Chamber of Commerce. Due to Fair Housing Laws, real estate licensees are not going to be able to answer that question and you'll have to determine for yourself what you classify as "safe" or "middle class." I hope this helps!

Trudy- It's a good time to buy in Harrisburg, PA. There is a good selection of inventory, the interest rates are low, and compared to many areas around the country, our appreciation was reasonable. As mentioned before it is unethical to "steer" buyers towards or away from any area. You can visit my website @ and click on moving & relocation resources to find links to area government offices, chambers, informative web links, and standard & poors school reports.

Real Estate Brokers can find themselves in trouble for "steering" buyers to or away from neighborhoods. The answers below are great becuase they direct you to great sources of information so that you can decide for yourself what is the safe and middle class neighborhoods that fit your needs. You may even want to contact the local police department and request statistics on crime rate and types of crimes committed in each area. Most departments provide that information at no cost.

Trudy - To answer your first question, as far as the area of Harrisburg is concerned. It is rated by many experts to be a 'Diamond in the Rough' , Historically the area has been in an 'upswing' with lots of revitalization occurring oer the last 5-10 years. It is also one of the 'most inexpensive' places to live based on the surrounding states and other countis near by...Hope this also helps!
