I was publisher of a newspaper in Sarasota a year ago, http://www.creativeloafing.com. Sarasota is a nice, quiet seasonal artsy community with a lot of snowbirds. There are some nice museums, beautiful beaches, and great restaurants. That being said, it is a pretty quiet town out of season and you may want to travel to Tampa for more activity options. Lakewood Ranch is where you would probaby have the higher concentration of families with school-age children.

I have lived here in Sarasota for the past 3 years. We have nieces and nephews of that age range. Florida is an interesting place. The people who are born and stayed love it intensely. Sarasota as a city is a jewel amongst the Beach cities of the Gulf coast. Ideal for its spectacular beaches and easy access to water and water sports. A very expensive town but with some good private schools. Children used to growing up and running around in the grass may find it a bit of a change. The fireants in the grass are ferocious and produce welts. I have not had a problem with snakes, but you want to keep kids away from the ponds which all have gators. Culturally Sarasota is better than the other Florida towns as well.
