That should be an interesting culture shock. I love West Springfield Elementary. Its rated 9.5 out of 10 on great schools and we can see why. Small classes with great teachers and if you live in the school district its an easy 5 minute walk to the school. You can jump on the parkway down to Ft Belvoir with a total trip time of around 15 minutes depending on the time of day. Take a look at if you want to learn more about the neighborhoods near Ft. Belvoir. Talk to you soon and hang ten.

Best is to look at and check out the zip code to which the school is and find homes/apartments within the zip code. it's worked for me for years.

Crestwood, Lynnbrook, Springvale and Beverly Forest SD's are very close to Ft. Belvoir. All Fairfax County School are excellent. My father was Dean of Men for the Engineer School before he retired; and I married and raised my family in Springfield. We lived in Springvale and Crestwood. I know these areas have changed a lot over the years -- but they are still great places to live. Elementary schools are: Crestwood, Garfield and Lynnbrook. Crestwood, Lynnbrook SD have sidewalks and kids walk to school. I am not a real estate broker, just a Mom/Grandmother. My kids loved walking to school with their friends. Best of Luck with your move.

If you haven't yet found a home, please consider the Mount Zephyr community. I've lived here for 10 years and can honestly tell you it's a great community about 2 miles north of Fort Belvoir and just south of Old Town Alexandria. Most homes have 1/2 acre lots, it's close to public transportation, and there's a great civic association. We're part of George Washington's original estate...and you can easily visit Mount Vernon for a pleasant outing. This month we are gearing up for theHalloweenie Party in the park--complete with hayrides for the kids. A similar community is Hayfield, located on the Telegraph Rd side of Fort Belvoir. They also have many family activities and are located minutes from the popular Kingstowne area. If you need more information, I am a RE/MAX ALLEGIANCE agent and always happy to help.

Hi I myself transferred from Hawaii to the Springfield area. I have a townhome in Saratoga Townhouse community which is very close to many great schools, I am also 4 miles from Ft. Belvoir, and public transportation comes to the corner of the street as well. Are you still looking into buying a house? The price you pay to rent out here can be a lot steeper than what you can pay for owning it. I am a veteran and with the market where it's owning my townhouse costs 1560 for the mortgague a month, its a 3 bedroom 2 bath townhouse. If you are interested please get in touch with me, i haven't listed it yet as the 23rd new carpet is being installed.

I would be happy to discuss your move to the Fort Belvoir, and the schools in the area. I am an Army wife and veteran myself :) My husband did a 2 year tour at Ft. Belvoir with the Rapid Equipping Force, and is now at the Pentagon. I understand how important it is to familiarize yourself with the area, especially with children. I specialize in military relocation, and can get some info to you ASAP.
Not sure if you want o rent or purchase. I can help you with both. I also provide a cash incentive for my valued clients at closing; in lieu of the Free Move my firm provides to it's clients.
Please contact me at your earliest convenience.

Your best bet is to go to the Fairfax County Pubilc Schools website and take a look at the schools. I wouldn't rule out Arlington or Alexandria City Schools either. Both are MUCH smaller systems and have excellent schools! Here are the three websites: Fairfax:, Arlington:, Alexandria City:

Hi Thobbs-Schools will have parent volunteers give you a tour of the buildings and talk about the life style of the school, the principles ideas and goals, and the school community as a whole. Since schools are not open at this time, you can't get a feel of how they search for the PTAs website and give the PTA President a call. Besides test scores and budget figures, the PTA is the next best source for what a school is really like. And they will be happy to talk to you!

Under Fairfax county Public Schools, each school will have the website address for their PTA. The website also provides information for "ranking" of the schools in our county. Since schools offer different curriculums from Language Emersion, to Open Classrooms, and GT Programs, you might find that the school of your choice isn't in the preferred area to work. Also, many schools with lower test scores receive additional county resources to bring those scores up, resulting in much smaller classes than other sometimes these schools turn out to be more desirable than originally thought. Fairfax has wonderful elementary schools.

Aloha Thobbs,

I am about to put my Mother-in-laws place on the market in Lorton only minutes to the gate to Belvoir. My Father-in-law, no longer with us, worked there for many years. In fact Mom has just purchased a condo in Hawaii overlooking the Punch Bowl, etc. It is a well maintained home I would be happy to speak to you further regarding. Sign is up but have not put it in the system yet. Really it all depends on what you need and want, and how much you can afford.

Besides schools & the commute to Fort Belvoir what other things are important in finding the right home in the area?

Are you planning on renting or buying?
Do you want a detached home or will a TH be more to your liking?
How many bedrooms & bathrooms do you need.
Do you have pets & need a fenced yard?

Certainly you will have plenty of volunteers to help you with your search. If you have already reviewed schools on the Fairfax County School site or at great you can use my IDX search tool to locate properties by specific school. Unfortunately not all agents put school information in the listings so the list may be incomplete.

If you need additional assistance feel free to contact me.

Oh, Gee, It seems to me that you have just described the Waynewood Elementary school area, which is really highly sought after and also close to Ft. Belvoir. How highly sought after? Well, I can only find four fully available listings in that area. If you want to look at these, with no obligation, of course, you could just E-mail me. See the Web reference, below, or contact me at 703-967-7162

Going from Hawaii to the DC area will be quite a change! I live and work in Springfield and work with a lot of military families coming to the area. Springfield and Alexandria are some of the closest areas to Belvoir and offer lots of housing choices. Fairfax County schools are among the top in the nation so you will also have many good choices for schools.

If you would like help finding a rental or a home to purchase I would be happy to work with you to find something that suits your family. As a parent, I know how important it is to find a neighborhood that is the right fit.

Please feel free to drop me an email ( and I can help you get your search started in the right direction.
