Good point from Mary - the rental market is strong - as is the "for sale" market. Rather than working long shots, align yourself with an agent and shop within your budget.

You can always try but why would the landlord decrease the rent $200-300 a month when they most likely will get the $1600 they are asking. I suggest you work with a realtor to help you find a rental in your price range.

Suggest you work with an agent and have them discuss your offer directly with the listing agent - may be possible and you'd look back with regret if it rents and you miss it.
