You don't have to be but Realtor's really don't like showing people homes unless they have a pre-approval which establishes what the buyer can purchase. A solid pre-approval includes: Credit Check, existing debt verification, Income verification and down payment verification. It is advised that you also have a clear understanding of what you can afford as well.
