Hi Andy, it will show up in the county records, typically 2-3 days after recording, the information is available online.
The previous listing agent may have "agency" with a buyer that was developed during the listing period or it may be in process of foreclosure. When you form an agency relationship with an agent, they typically will research these things to find out if the home is still available for purchase.
An agent representing you, will help you ....with all your research, and making the best purchase terms you can on any property you may choose to purchase. If you had an interest in this property, your agent could possibly have made sure you had a back up offer, communicated with the bank or various other communications to represent your interests.
Do you have an agent?? I highly recommend you interview a few, find one you are comfortable with, who will represent YOU, your interests and goals. In the state of Washington a buyers agent represents YOU, the sellers agent or listing agent, works for the seller.
