Animal unit is technically broken down to a 1,000 lb range animal. A typical cow will run a little over 1,000lbs and a weaning weight calf will run just under 500 lb. Therefore it will take 1.5 animal units to run a cow calf pair comfortably on that particular property so that a small ranch with a sustainability of 100 AU will run roughly 67 head of, say, Herefords.
