James has answered your question. I will add that the best way is to always check on the property you want to purchase with the city for it's guidelines. These are found on line but it is good to get answers straight from the horses mouth. The property next door may have chickens but were grandfathered in when the codes where changed. So it is always good to ask.
Many of the municipalities allow from 20-100 chickens on 1/2 acre parcels, with 1 rooster. If you want to raise more than that, I recommend the county areas Apple Valley, Hesperia, Adelanto, and Phelan.
