How do you find out if a clearly abandoned house is available? There is no sign?

Asked by Jaclyn, Huntington, NY Sun Apr 19, 2009

This house is clearly abandoned. The property is has been left to overgrow, there is a chain around the front gates, etc. Is there a way to find out if this house is available, bank owned or what the deal is?

I checked the Multiple Listing Service, and it does not appear. It still could be an exclusive listing, but that seems improbable because there is no sign.

I don't see a lis pendens showing on public records, so it probably is not bank owned.

You might try contacting the town to see who is paying the taxes on the property, or writing a letter to the address expressing your interest in purchasing the home. Your letter most likely will be returned, but it may be forwarded to an attorney or someone else who is responsible for the property.

Even if you locate the decision maker regarding that property, there are several reasons why it may not be on the market. It could be tied up in an estate, or it may have already been sold and the new owner is not ready to develop it.

contact a local Realtor and ask them to research the tax records to see who the current owner is
