Downtown Houston vs Clear Lake living

Asked by Caris Beckman, 77058 Sat Feb 27, 2010

Contemplating job change to the JSC area. Husband, wife, 12 year old kiddo and 12 year old labrador. Prefer city life - but how is commute from downtown-walk-to-everything-Houston to the Clear Lake area? What are zip codes or specific neighborhoods downtown that get a terrific 3 BR condo/townhouse for 450-500k?
School options in downtown Houston? Can you direct me to a helpful website to check ratings/etc?

Hi, you can visit my website at http://www.HoustonHomeRentalsAndSales.com to check your school areas and school grades. You can also search for homes on my website for specific areas or school district areas. I grew up in the Clear Lake area and it is mostly family life out there. It's a great place to bring up children and about a 40 min. commute to Downtown. A great zip code for close to downtown, would be the memorial park area which is 77024. Just contact me, and I'm sure I can help find what you are looking for. I would be more than happy to do a search for you and send you homes by e-mail. I'm a native Houstonian and I know all areas of Houston.

Hi Caris,

Good question and geographic location is always a preference of the buyer. As a Realtor in Clear Lake for the past 19 years servicing many JSC employees I would say that Clear Lake has a lot to offer and is not "too" suburban. The property you searched on Coastal Oak is a wonderful home and I also live in that Bay Oaks subdivision. The Clear Lake Independent School District is an excellent school district and I would encourage you to check out CCISD on their web site. The commute to downtown and the Galleria area from Clear Lake is typically 30 - 45 minutes depending and time of day. Clear Lake has a lot to offer considering recreation. You might try the Clear Lake Chamber's web site.
Please let me know if I can be of any service to you in searching the Clear Lake area and you can call me direct at 281-615-6200. Good luck with your search. Carole Haider, Prudential Gary Greene Realtors.

Hi Caris,

The commute from Inside the Loop to Clear Lake is not that bad depending on what time of day you leave. You are basically going against the traffic. You will hit traffic around the NASA area, but it isn't that bad. The commute is about a 1/2 hour. Zip codes that you might want to look into are: 77006, 77007, 77008, 77009, 77401. These are area codes for Rice Military, Memorial Park, the Heights, Musuem area and Bellaire. Go to the HISD site and look up schools in these areas. I would be happy to help you. I specialize in these areas. You can email me at dstrudler@me.com or call me at 713-254-2806.

Have you tried http://www.HAR.com? There is great information on this site that pertains to neighborhoods and schools. In HISD, as a parent, I know there are some great opportunities for students including Magnet programs where you don't necessarily send your child to schools that they are district to. HISD also has a website that could be helpful, http://www.houstonisd.org. Please don't hesitate to contact me further questions about your home search.
