The answer is going to be found in the Condominium's rules and regs. They would also be based on any fire codes that the city has, but the easiest way to find them is the rules and regs of the condo first, assuming that you can get an updated copy of them easily. If you are planning on buying in the building, they should give you a copy to look over. If you are planning on selling, or already own, then you should have a copy already, or can certainly get another copy. You should also, however, match these rules up with the city's rules. If there is too much red tape going through the city government, you could call the local fire dept. They very likely know what the rules are. All of these avenues are meant to get you a preliminary answer for safety until you can get final word through the city, unless the fire dept can assure you that they are quoting city codes.
