It is an awesome place to live and raise children. First of all the schools are amazing. Class sizes are low so it is like sending your children to a private school. The children are able to get a lot of attention. Most people in this area value education. The village offers so very much such as private beaches for community members, a golf course, tennis courts, ice-skating rink, a village center where you can rent rooms for a party and a year round farmer's market too. Good afternoon Barbara. Property taxes vary, and are based on the individual property. There are numerous factors that make up a properties total tax amount. Some factors that influence a properties taxes include lot size, upgrades, and other improvements made to the home. In Port Jefferson, or anywhere on Long Island, for that matter--taxes for one property may be $7,000. However, for another property of a different caliber, but on the same block, may be $12,000.

I think that you should narrow your search, to meet your "tax" criteria, if you are looking in Port Jefferson or in any neighborhood. Taxes play a big role in the decision making process, so deep consideration should be taken into account. Once you have found a property that you truly like, you should always verify taxes by contacting the local tax assessors office.

Port Jefferson always stands behind its pricing. It is unique in the sense that it is earthy and artsy and there is a certain joie de vivre that is unspoken. Most who live, don't want to leave, they enjoy the strolls, the biking, the meet and greet in the village.
For the most part, prices are stable and area can command the market.
It also comes down to, selling the life style. Once experienced, it is difficult to replace anywhere else.

I am a native of Bayside! I went to Cardozo HS, PS 74 and PS 205. I lived on Bell blvd for over 25 years and Moved out to Port Jefferson/Port Jeff Station.. I was commuting to Manhattan for a while, and must admit it was tedious. If you have the type of job where you can get flex time to beat the rush hour, you can make it in under 2 hours.. and even better if you can work from home a day or 2 a week. The lifestyle out this way is could be worth it..
If you don't mind the train (bring your laptop and phone), you can make a go of it.. but If you don't enjoy train rides I would recommend that you consider other moving closer in ..
I am a full time realtor and could shed some light on the reality of commuting to the city from various parts of Long Island- Give me a call anytime..
