Beth ... Realtors are not permitted to discuss whether a given area is "safe." You can look at crime stats on several websites ... I like www.neighborhoodscout.com. From a practical point of view, however, in a market as active as Houston's, you're not going to get very much for under $30,000. I wouldn't be surprised if the property needed at least that much work (probably more) to bring it into shape. You'll also likely notice that there is a recognizable correlation between criminal activity and the price of housing in a specific location. Even if you were to consider the home, the sale would have to be for cash only. Lenders generally don't consider financing less than $50,000. I trust this has helped ... best of luck. ... more
