Susie Kay answered:
What do you prefer? Do you prefer to rent or to purchase? They both come with their positives and negatives. If renting then you usually don't have to worry about repairs on the property. I said usually because sometimes you and your landlord may ended up arguing as of who is responsible for the repair, who cost the damage, whether it's a normal wear and tear etc. In renting you are paying your landlord's mortgage, you have no tax deduction, and you don't build your equity. If you have your own home, the interest that you pay for your loan is tax deductible, the tax that you pay for the home is tax deductible, in 30 years or whatever your loan term is you build equity and you can sell your home and get your money back plus any gains if the home increase in value. Any repairs or maintenance of the home is going to be out of your pocket. You'll also need to have some money for down payment on your home (depending on the type of your loan).

If you decide on purchasing a home I can connect you with local lenders that I typically work with. Even if you don't have the best credit score they can help you and guide you toward what you need to do. Feel free to reach out to me if you are interested.

Nick Surguine answered:

You've asked a great question, as Plano is a really hot market right now, and Pasquinellis Parker Estates has some very nice homes! Doing a quick search, it doesn't look like there are any homes in that particular subdivision available right now for rental, if that is what you are interested in. There is one that recently was listed at $1650/month, but it is currently pending a new lease.

While it looks like Pasquinellis Parker Estates may not currently be available, there are many other 3 bedrooms available in Plano, if you are interested! Glad to help if I can!

Rental is case by case basis. Be forewarned, though, that rental is really hot now and many landlords are picky in selecting their tenants.

If you have a current lawyer or criminal defense attorney, you could ask them for suggestions. Also, I know that not all apartment landlords run background checks. If they do, then you could as for a letter of recommendation from your local church or parole officer. That would improve your chances at finding a contract.

Melissa Hailey answered:
In the entire Collin County area, there are currently 5 homes available for lease that will accept Section 8 vouchers. 2 of these are condos in North Dallas, 1 home in Plano, 1 in Wylie, and 1 in Anna. Depending on which housing authority you use, you may be able to convince a landlord to join the voucher program....but it's always a case-by-case basis. As you are preparing to move, please know that if you have to get a landlord approved to start accepting vouchers (meaning they are new to the program) it will probably take you at least that long to go through the approval process. I also agree with Kenneth - if you do find a Realtor who is willing to help you, stay loyal to them. Not too many agents will work with you, and when you find one you should hold on to them. PLUS, the agent only gets paid after you move in...and it's a lot of extra work to get a voucher approved. Good luck out there!

Maggie Herna…, Real Estate Pro in Frisco, TX
Wed Feb 5, 2014
Maggie Hernandez answered:
You are smart to ask! There has been a scam where listing information is copied and posted as a new rental listing, often at a lower rent than the real rent. Unfortunately, it is very easy to copy a photo from the internet and re-use it elsewhere. The scammers have been known to ask for applications, with all of your personal information, and money for deposits. Since they look legitimate, it can be hard to tell it's a scam until it's too late. What a shame that people do things like this!

It would be wise to verify any listing you see for rent with a real, licensed Realtor. You can verify licensure of any agent in Texas by going to: and it should display their current brokerage information, so you can look up and verify the real contact information for the agent as well. Google the brokerage name and find their contact information through the official agency website. You can also look them up through the local associations, like Collin County Association of Realtors.
