I own an investment property in the Pittsburgh neighborhood. Pittsburgh is safe, and has decent schools but has a lot of property crime. So you have to keep properties fully occupied, or put VIP/VPS on your windows and doors.
If you have experience, and can manage the property in a difficult area, then you'll probably see great returns in 3-5 years.
If you aren't going to do that, and aren't going to put the time into it, and aren't going to keep it up, then we really don't want you investing there.... more
Usually, no one breaks into occupied properties. Just make sure to get an alarm system, motion-sensitive flood lights and may be good to get a house sitter if ever away for a while. Don't leave anything valuable in plain sight in car, etc. Most of the crime in Pittsburgh is property crime, not violent crime. Still, it's best to stay indoors when really late.... more
