Where are the best dog parks in the city?

I am thinking of getting a dog and want to know if there are good dog parks where I can take my dog off leash and not get in trouble.

there are a lot of dog parks to choose from. Fort Funston is a great place to take your dog where they can go off leash. check out this link where all the dog parks are mapped.

Washington square park in North Beach is awesome! With troops of early morning tai chi-ers, coffee shops on every corner (including Mama's for breakfast), and a happening canine social scene, this is a great park to exercise (and socialize) your dog.

I usually don't answer questions posted three years prior, either, but in case anyone out there has stumbled upon this question because they own a dog and are thinking about the best places to live in San Francisco, here's a helpful blog entry I posted earlier this week:

I know this is an old question but no one mentioned it. Sigmund Stern Grove. The west end of it is huge and a great place for dogs to run. It's huge and very nice place to be.

The grove is at 19th & Sloat Blvd. The dog area is The best entrance to the dog run parking lot is on Crestlake.

I like the fenced dog park at Corona Heights Park. If you want to find all the dog parks I've created a google map of the Bay Area dog parks (including unofficial ones). Here is the direct link:

You can also find it on my blog along with some other useful maps.

I like the one off of Lake Street, in the Inner Richmond, East of Park Presidio. Not usually too crowded, nice people ( & dogs).

Bernal Heights Park has fantastic views and nice dog owners -- and a Kong really soars when you pitch it off the top of the hill... think of it as twice the doggy-exercise for the effort of one throw.

Buena Vista Park in Upper Haight is a good one. There's a rewarding view of the city after you and your pup make the climb to the top of the hill.

Dolores park is pretty great, if you are living in Noe Valley or Castro/Mission. Tons of space and hills for the dog to run around

The best dog park in San Fran is called Fort Funston, and it's an enclosed beach. Unfortunately you have to walk down a big hill of sand to get to the actual beach but it's well worth the journey! I used to take my dog there all the time and he would run up and down the shore chasing the birds!! Oh my, what fun!
