I know this may be late and you figured it out already, but in case you're still seeking advice for the best route in...

From the Soldier Hill area of Paramus, the easiest way is to walk .5 to .75 miles south to Oradell Ave and take the 165P to 42nd St. Port Authority bus station. You can also drive to the Garden State Parkway Exit 165 Park and Ride (1-2 miles depending where you are exactly) and take NJ Transit 165P (Coincidence that the exit number matches the bus route).

Another route is to take the 164RF that is ON Soldier Hill Road, but that only runs every 30 minutes during rush hour in each direction.

Here's a schedule of the stops:
http://www.njtransit.com/pdf/bus/T0165.pdf

#17 is the Soldier Hill Road stop that 165RF uses.
#13 is the GSP Park and Ride stop that 165P uses.
Note: 165RF and 165P DO NOT stop at the same places in Paramus.

I would avoid the trains as parking is very difficult to obtain and there is a mandatory transfer with a ~1/2 mile walk to the connecting platform for the next train into the city.

The schools of full of children. Paramus and surrounding Bergen County towns are great for kids and young couples. The Garden state Plaza Mall is a great place to find them. Lots of great shops along Rt 17 and Rt 4.

Paramus is a large town of about 30,000 inhabitants so naturally, it has its share of break-ins like any other town. However, I find it to be a safe place to live. To find out the crime rate, contact the Paramus police department. I have been selling homes in the town for over 25 years, and have not heard any complaints from my buyers.
