Welcome to the left coast. I have a son who lives in Williamsburg and the rents in Palo Alto seem to be equivalent to Williamsburg. When are you moving out here? I have a one bedroom in a 4 plex I manage that allows dogs that will be available in June. There is also a complex in Palo Alto called Southwood that allows dogs and is adjacent to a park that has a dog run. There is an apartment building in Mountain View called Avalon that allows dogs. You would probably enjoy being close to University Ave or California Ave in Palo Alto, Castro Street in Mountain View, or Santa Cruz Ave in Menlo Park. These are all close to Stanford and as close to city life as possible in the endless burbs of California.

You have already recieved some good advice, I would like to add a few neighborhoods for you to consider, Campbell it has a wonderful little down town with good resturants, Willow Glen also has a nice little down town area, also on the higher end there are Los Gatos and Saratoga they both have very fine down town areas, they would generally be a shorter commute for you and they are are all vibrant and each has it's own special style.
I hope this helps, feel free to contact me with any questions.

There is a great site called that shows you what is walkable from different areas.

Our downtown (called Center City, where I live and have my office) is Manhattanesque in it's walkability.

There are small towns in the suburbs like Narberth for example that you can walk to the train and the downtown area and get most of what you need.

If I can be of ay more help, please let me know.
