Maudine Ormsby

Maudine Ormsby was at the center of one of the most notorious pranks in U.S. college history. In the fall of 1926, Miss Ormsby was named Homecoming Queen at the Ohio State University. Rosalind Morrison won the Homecoming Queen election, but because only 10,000 students were enrolled and 12,000 votes had been cast, it was clear the election had "irregularities". Rosie, as she was known, was named Queen, but being an honorable woman, withdrew when the fraud became apparent. Runner-up, Maudine Ormsby, a mystery candidate nominated by the College of Agriculture but not enrolled as a student, became Homecoming Queen. However, it was the utterly unique Queen that was the greatest irregularity—Maudine Ormsby was a Holstein cow.

Maudine Ormsby was crowned Queen and viewed her subjects as part of the homecoming parade. According to OSU, however, she did not attend the dance held in her honor. Rosalind Morrison Strapp, would joke the rest of her life that her epitaph should read, "But for Maudine, here lies the queen."

As a former realtor in a major condo market (New York City area), I don't think there is any publication across the country that shows comparable condo fees. The reason is 1) condo fees vary in what is included and what is not included. 2) Condo fees pay for capital improvement projects, regular maintenance, personnel, etc. These costs vary widely from one condo to another.

You can have 2 condo buildings next to each other. Let's say Condo A recently increased the monthly fee to pay for replacement of terraces and Condo B has no capital improvement projects going on. Condo A's monthly fee will be higher than Condo B. OR let's say that Condo A's resident pay for a swimming pool and Condo B's residents don't.

How can you compare condo fees? You can't. The only thing you can do is VERIFY what is included and what is not included. Then compare what you are paying for what. Also, you need to review the HOA financials. This is critical. Some condos are real good with financial management and other condos don't know how to balance a checkbook. This also increases HOA fees - when the Board of Directors screws up the money.

How are the schools in Girard? What is the crime rate like? Is the area in decline like a lot of the greater Youngstown area? Is the local economy strong or weak?

The listing is on Zillow (Zillow owns Trulia) and the phone #419-227-3522. According to Zillow's Price history tab, it was listed for sale by owner on 9/26/16 for $49,000. Current asking price is $44,000. I viewed the pictures. It's clean but it needs upgrades and renovations to modernize it. Basically the house is a throwback to the 1970's. ... more
