Hi Mrs Dexte
I'm a smoker and my husband quite smoking about 5 yrs ago. But when we both smoked I could smell it when we came home, even thought I was and still am a smoker. I don't smoke in the house anymore since my husband quit out of respect to him and because of the smell it leaves. But if you live in the home and your husband still smokes the only thing I can recommend is air fresheners and emptying the ash trays. Also if you have central air conditioner spray the intake with a fresh sent and turn the air circulation on but not the air conditioning. This will allow fresh air to circulate around the house. If you have left and no one smokes in the house now, Then just clean up with bleach cleaners, and spray the home with the air fresheners if you don't want to paint. Do not keep a candle lit then people will know your covering up a smell. Some people bake cookies to throw of a sent, but i'm not sure if that will work.
Good luck

When it comes to any safety/crime related issues, it's always best to contact the local police department with all your questions, hear all there is to hear firsthand. If unfamiliar with the area(s) do revisit more than once and at different times of day, possibly chat with locals/neighbors. Real estate professionals are prohibited from steering, enticing a buyer to purchase/rent, or not, in specific neighborhoods.

I would research Ballentine for crime statistics.,, and are sources to research a property or area.
Finally, the absolutely BEST thing would be to knock on the doors of your future neighbors on that street, tell them you're thinking of moving onto the street, and ask THEM about the street and the neighborhood.

Ghent is where you want to be! It is an ideal distance from everything. I live in Ghent and it is a safe, tight knit and lovely neighborhood. I can't think of any other place I would want to be. I have an awesome listing in Ghent right now - my house! Not because I want to leave Ghent but just b/c of other circumstances. My house is a single family and I have it listed for 349,900. It was renovated just last year. No matter what you end up buying I really think Ghent is the place to be you will not be disapointed!! Call me if you have any questions or need anything else, thanks

Hi. You seem already to be aware that flood insurance is required by lenders to be purchased for homes in a great number of neighborhoods and areas throughout Norfolk and its surrounding area. I can tell you, though, that your question honestly cannot be answered without having a specific address - because quite often what you will find is that houses can have no or different flood insurance requirements (by being mapped in a different zone or even in no flood insurance zone!) within even the same neighborhood! In fact, I know some properties that have been required to have flood insurance only because one corner, or only because maybe the garage, is in a flood zone even if the rest of the house and property are not! The sure way to find out an answer is to provide the exact address to your home insurance agent and they can check the federal flood plain maps/zones for you. Feel free to contact me at and I will be happy to help you obtain the information needed as well. ... more

Hello Dear Jennifer. I hope this finds you and yours well. Are you relocating from Frederick? That's a beautiful spot. I presently live in Winona in a turn of the century victorian. I find Winona to be a very peaceful, people oriented area. It is a diverse neighborhood with many ages, professions and styles of homes. The residents are friendly and tend to keep their homes and yards well maintained. There are many children who enjoy riding their bikes, walking their pets, or climbing trees. There is a large green space where many go to play ball, etc. If you like the charm of an older home, the feel of a small neighborhood or interaction with your neighbors then Winona is a place you will want to consider. I am the Sales Manager for Long and Foster's Norfolk Office located in Ghent. If you need further information, or if you would like for me to have one of my top notch agents send you information on our area, please email me your "wish list" with the requirements for your new home as well as the price range. Thank you so much Jennifer and I hope to hear from you soon. Have a beautiful Tuesday!
