its sketch-town. definitely a street by street basis in SOMA, regardless of how pretty the realtors and brokers want to paint it, it's reputation is well-deserved. plenty of petty crime, car break-ins, and homeless people in SOMA-- definitely more than in other parts of the city. also, the area is very lively with lots of clubs and shops, along with racing traffic on nearly all of the streets (read: lots of street noise as you are trying to sleep). this is not a neighborhood for the faint of heart! if you like living in the midst of the grit and hustle and bustle of a big city then this could be for you, and don't get me wrong, there are good things too but if you were hoping for parks, open spaces and quaint victorians you will not be happy here. there are nice parts but they are fleeting. i say all of this as a person who has lived at the edge of SOMA and mission for almost 2 years. it definitely is convenient for start-ups if thats your thing. and freeway access is cake. honestly, i've never understood the appeal of SOMA.
