Just got a job at Linkedin in Mountain View, CA. I'm moving from Orlando, FL , starting out in my career, and don't know the area.

What's an affordable place close to work with minimal traffic issues. How much can I expect to pay for 1 or 2 bedroom apartments, and how much would corporate housing or furnished places cost?

I appreciate any and all feedback!
Thanks,
Joe

Most rentals cam be found on Trulia, Zillow, or Craigslist. Occasionally they are on MLS, but not often. You can also contact apartment complexes directly. For example, Avalon allows dogs, is in downtown MV, but has a weight limit. There is a lot of competition for rentals in Mountain View. so do not get discouraged or surprised by how difficult it is. You may want to see about staying at a Marriott Residence Inn where they allow pets in order to give yourself time to find a place to rent.

We live in that area. We know the seller and neighbors as well. That is a very nice community and area to live in. high school is pretty good. you could walk to castro and shoreline park. that is most of people we know are doing.

We also help 15neighbors in this community (named gables end) to refinance. We definitely know this area very well. We offer the lowest wholesale rate for them. most of them: 5arm rate is 2.625, no point no fee. some of them choose 30fix, rate is 3.75(for condo, 3.5for single family home), no point no fee.

You could contact me for more details about this area and loan support.

The immediate area in The Crossings is very nice and convenient location with all the shopping stores like Safeway, the San Antonio Center and the 24 Hour Fitness Super Sport. The best judge on a neighborhoood is good is actually you. You can talk with people that live in the area or you can spend time in the area to jugde for yourself. I think that the crime rate in general, in Mountain View is pretty low. However, the best people to ask would be the police department, feel free to call them and get the data from them. They are very helpful and friendly. ... more

Hi Thirty and thanks for your post.

I'm not certain where you obtained information that violent crime was higher in Mountain View than the county average unless, of course, the average is higher due to the smaller population of Mountain View. Mountain View has only 72,000 residents (as of 2009), compared with 140,000 in Sunnyvale and more than 1 million in San Jose.

Also, everything truly depends on what you classify as "violent crimes"? According the Mountain View's site, there were slightly more than 2000 incidents of FBI Class 1 crimes in the city, but "zero" homicides in Mountain View. The bulk of the crimes were larceny--theft.

For more information about crime in Mountain View, check out their police site at http://www.ci.mtnview.ca.us/city_hall/police/crime_prevention/crime_statistics.asp

Remember that all cities will have crime. Because Mountain View is an affluent town with a median average income well above the norm in California and its located near the freeway, it may have a bit more larceny and theft than other more secluded towns like Los Altos, which does not have major roads into the town.

Good luck and check with the City's website for more information!

Sincerely,

Hello Mindy,
without generalizing too much, Mountain View holds its value a little better than Sunnyvale in hard times, in the same way that Palo Alto holds it better than Mountain View. As you go South it seems over time that this is the rule.
North Sunnyvale seems to be less desirable than South Sunnyvale if you look at the prices. The schools are important in that equation. Of course, South Sunnyvale right next to the freeway is not a great investment, and some areas in the North could be more desirable...
For more details stats, don't hesitate to go to the attached web reference and enter the appropriate area for Mountain View.
Let me know if I can help further,
Francis

Hi Raj and thanks for your question. I was born and raised in Mountain View and then moved to Sunnyvale. I frequent many hamlets of Mountain View, but here's what you might find interesting:

Mountain View is nestled between Los Altos to the North and Sunnyvale to the South. The residents are mostly professional and the best places to live are in areas where the school is Los Altos School district elementary and middle schools--usually a litte further north and on the west side of El Camino Real. The population of Mountain View is mostly professional with residents working for Sun Micro, Apple, Google, and other high profile companies in the area. In fact, when Google went public, housing prices in Mountain View shot up over 10 percent in about one month.

The residents of Mountain View love their downtown area, and their City Hall is famous as a backdrop in a movie staring John Lithgow. John's pictures grace many of the walls inside the City. They have one of the best planning departments to work with, and the City government is both cooperative and responsive. The newer library is wonderful. Restaurants line the downtown Castro street, and you'll find many neighbors walking around in the summer enjoying the evening.

Because Mountain View and Los Altos share a high school and overlapping school districts, many Mountain View residents can be enjoy the sights and art of Los Altos, including the Hillview Community Center and theaters in both Mountain View and Los Altos. Mountain View has the Shoreline Ampitheatre and residents from Mountain View can often get preferred tickets for concert events there. The best celebration is the Fourth of July at Shoreline Theatre and fireworks can be seen from many parts of the city. Shoreline Ampitheatre is located in the wetlands near the bay's edge in Mountain View and you'll find plenty of residents, biking, hiking and taking in the lovely sights and animal life at this preserve.

Mountain View has convenient access to both 85 (to go south) and 101 (to go north). Housing prices are a bit higher in Mountain View than at points further south, and there are definitely better sections of town than others. For more information about Mountain View, please contact your real estate professional. Good luck and happy house hunting!!

Sincerely,
