I rent in Trenton at present and recently moved out here from the East Village. (I'm a 37 yo male for context.) I've found that we NYC-transplants seem to arrive with more tolerance to live in a rough area, probably because even bad neighborhoods in NYC still command desirability.

Thus it was sort of unpleasant to discover that there are parts of Trenton that are definitely uncomfortable. Like uncomfortable in ways I haven't been in NYC since about 1995. The train station is not in a great area and walking home from it can feel sketchy. Mostly this is because you're passing through some poorly lit areas that are not designed with pedestrians in mind. Bus service is available although it will feel inefficient to wait for transport for traveling such a short distance. If you do need to commute to NYC regularly, Mill Hill is realistically the only desirable neighborhood with good proximity to the train station.

Most of the crime that drives Trenton's reputation is primarily gang related. This means that unless you're part of a gang there's relatively low risk of that affecting you. That said, Trenton does have a surprising amount of urban blight (ie depressing neighborhoods) as well as a shockingly-aggressive homeless population compared to what you can encounter in NYC.

If you are intent on Trenton, and willing to eject your requirement of walking home from the train station, then it's worth checking out areas that are closer to the capital building. I'm near the Wyndham Garden Hotel (formerly the Marriott) and find this spot to be pretty desirable and often overlooked. Getting to the train station is about a 15 min walk but bus service is pretty convenient and I can be at the train station inside of 5 minutes if things align.
