Alejandro Bendayan answered:
Some areas of Coconut Grove have private policy or security services like the Bonita Park area where roving guards police the area 24 hours a day. I've been renting a summer home in the area for the past 4 years and never had an issue with crime during that time. The rest of the year the property is also occupied by its owners and they have not had issues either since they bought the property. They are very happy with the security of the neighborhood. Checking with the local police department should be your next step if you wish to inquire about crime rates in the area. ... more

If you're a law enforcement officer, pre-k through 12th grade teacher, firefighter, or medical technician you can qualify for the Good Neighbor Next Door Program which is a HUD program that gives you a discount of 50% of the list price of the home. In return you must make that property your sole residence for 36 months.

For more information regarding this program or the properties available with this program, you can give me a call at any time at 786-370-7329, I'd love to help!

In Miami, I love the city of Palmetto Bay. I lived there for about 5 years and I am looking to move back in the near future. I love the fact that is family oriented, close to US 1 SR, full of great supermarkets, restaurants, libraries, natural parks and great school. House sizes are ideal, big back yards, beautiful gardens, great looking house... This is my dream city and I going back to live there soon. ... more

Dear Joanne,

To be perfectly honest, this is not a question that anyone can answer as it is a question that you need to ask yourself, just put slightly different. What exactly is it that you are looking for? Once you can answer this (maybe make a bullet point type list), you can then weight it against the things that others have mentioned earlier in this thread. If there are enough matches, then you will be able to answer your own question.

I know that this is indeed an old thread, but based on what I just read, no one really answered it in the way it was meant to be answered.

I would establish a friendly ground first before touching the issue that is sensitive.
Go and leave your business card, tell them something about yourself and your family, what you do, what you can help with, ask what they do, welcome them to the neighborhood etc.
Once you talk to them several times you can occasionally mention; oh by the way, I wanted to ask you something...and take it from there...

Terri Vellios answered:
The term neighborhood has many meanings and uses. For example, neighborhood can be used to refer to the small group of houses in the immediate vicinity of one's house or to a larger area with similar housing types and market values.

Neighborhood is also used to describe an area surrounding a local institution patronized by residents, such as a church, school, or social agency. It can also be defined by a political ward or precinct. The concept of neighborhood includes both geographic (place-oriented) and social (people-oriented) components.

These many interpretations lead to a healthy debate on what boundaries are most useful in neighborhood planning efforts. Academically, every field has a different logic for their definition. Neighborhood associations and community groups offer their interpretations. City Planning departments often designate neighborhood boundaries along census tract boundaries. And, in fact, community residents quite frequently have a very different mental map of their neighborhood than the officially designated neighborhood areas used by planners and policymakers. All definitions are important and meaningful. The question is how one begins to create agreement over the definitions so that the debate focuses not on boundary definitions but on how to make positive changes in the neighborhoods.
