Never send a “landlord” money via Money Gram without meeting them and previewing the home. Unfortunately, we are seeing a high volume of “professional” scammers in our market place. What they are currently doing is finding for sale listings and then posting them on websites such as craigslist as for rent listings. Once you contact them via the email posted, they will tell you that they are either out of the country on trip and cannot meet with you or they will give you another story that seems too good to be true. A few warning signs to look out for: Out of State Landlords asking for deposits to be wired before they meet you and properties that are priced “too” well (example would be a 3 bedroom house in Westport with all utilities for $800 per month). To be safe, you can always call me or any licensed realtor to do a quick search for the property and the name of the current owner. ... more
