Michele Ronsisvalle answered:
Yes we are! Brevard County (the Space Coast) is a very long, skinny county...70 miles from north to no matter where you are you're never far from the beaches! The section of A1A which runs along the Brevard shoreline was once named the best driving route in Florida. The A1A stretch has some very lovely communities with single family homes or condos directly on the beach to choose from. Let me know how I can help or if you need more specific info. ... more

Mark Sigler answered:
Hoover is an excellent school, as is Gemini and Indialantic Elementary schools. I had two children go to Gemini, then Hoover and Mel HS. All have typical challenges for the age group, etc but Hoover was the favorite experience for my kids. My children spent half a year in FLVS home schooled while we were in Australia, and then returned to MHS. So I have some limited perspective on home schooling. Kids making the transition from home schooled to Hoover will need some socialization and "thick skin" as kids at that age are MEAN. Kids find cliques quickly or are outsiders. This is true at any middle school. My recommendation is to make the move to public school sooner than later, assimilate and it will be a good experience. Once your kids start considering college while in HS, the home schooling can present challenges. Universities really want much more than excellent grades and SAT scores, such as clubs, student government, yearbook, newspaper, and community services activities. There are many social opportunities that the public schools offer that are hard to compensate for with home schooling. ... more

I asked a teacher who specializes in autism...although not the same as Aspergers, I thought she might know special education resources. She said to check into Incredible Horizons in Melboune. Also, a brand new school for special needs was started recently in Merritt Island. Also, she mentioned there was a great college internship program for older kids with Aspergers called the Brevard Center in Melborne that provides help with functioning at the post-secondary level and independent living. If anything, call them...they should know about what is available in Brevard for younger Aspergers. Good luck. It is a great environment here...I hope it works out for you. ... more
