Why does the crime rate seem to be lower in Ellijay than in Hiawassee? Is it generally a safer area in terms of maintaining a second home?

Crime rates are generally quite low in all of the mountain areas, but many homeowners who are not full time residents feel more comfortable living in a gated community. The Coosawattee River Resort in Ellijay is very popular because it has 4 manned gates and 24/7 security. There are several other gated communities in the Ellijay area, such as Blackberry Mountain, and Walnut Mountain that are a mix of second home and full time residents. I have lived in a couple of these communities myself and felt quite comfortable leaving my doors unlocked.

Many of the larger communities in Ellijay tend to be gated which I personally feel lends itself toward more security and safety overall. If you are seeking to purchase a second home in Ellijay, I would be more than happy to email you a list of prospective homes.

Take a look at the Second Amendment to the US Constitution. It will explain everything. Here is a link: http://caselaw.lp.findlaw.com/data/constitution/amendment02/

as a native of the area, it is my theory, that there are more hardscrabble folks looking for a way to supplement their income further up in the mountains...there is still a stigma against "florida people" and they are easy targets when they leave for the winter. Ellijay is a suburban area and a more blended community with jobs for the working poor.

Good question from Michael and advice from Brian.

May I add a comment from experience?

Property crime up here is pretty uncommon in my experience. I know plenty of folks who don't even lock their doors.

I normally suggest that folks buy in an area where they personally feel safe and make friends with full time neighbors. After that putting exterior lights on motion sensors is a great deterrent to potential trouble, though they are far more likely to be activated by wildlife than human beings.

If these don't make you feel secure enough, then an alarm system is always an option.

Hello Rachel,

I can not really speak as to the crime rates of either area. I would only suggest that you contact the local police or sheriffs department to get all the current statsitics for each township or specific areas in the townships. There are other websites available to look up say violent sex offenders (see referenced website).
