City $3.30 per $1000, paid 50/50
County $1.10 per $1,000 paid by seller

Two sites for information:

Besides expected expenses there are often questions about things such as fences not being on the property line. See http://julianalee.com/reinfo/property-ownership.htm

Hi Gary,

MOUNTAIN VIEW - City Transfer Tax $3.3/per $1,000 (Buyer Pays 50%, Seller Pays 50%)
SANTA CLARA - County Transfer Tax $1.1/per $1,000 (Seller Pays 100%)

Hope this is clear for you. Best Regards, Sophie CH LU

In Mountain View, you are in the Santa Clara County, so it is customary that the seller pays for the County transfer tax, (1.1 per thousand of the sales price), and as for the City transfer tax, it is split by buyer and seller most of the time. But there is no law about that, and it is the contract that says what happens - as always, the contract rules. The City transfer tax is 3.3 per thousand of the sales price.
Around here only San Jose, Palo Alto and Mountain View have a City transfer tax. Why? hmmm who knows? ;-)
