We are experiencing low unemployment in the Charlotte area. Corporations continue to move operations to the Charlotte area to take advantage of the low cost of living, favorable climate, and friendly environment-all of which make it easier to relocate their key employees here. Bank of America's headquarters are here, Wachovia is here, TIAA-CREF is here, Billy Graham Ministries is here, Philip Morris is here, Microsoft has a large campus, Google is building a server farm, on and on. We're currently the second largest financial center in the country, so the banks and affiliated businesses are a large part of our employment district.

The medical field is also growing by leaps and bounds, due in large part to the growing population of empty nesters and retirees in the area.

Unemployment is high in Charlotte, as is most of the country. Hopefully we will be on an upswing soon, can't scrape bottom much longer. I don't suppose...Optimism!

I was at a lunch meeting with Bob Morgan, the president of the Charlotte Chamber of Commerce and he projected these statistics: Charlotte will continue to grow in employment and population at a rate of 150,000 people per year over the next 20 years. Our current population for the greater Charlotte area is about 1.5 million. Projections in 2027 are 4.5 million, or about the current size of Atlanta. Employment is steady across most income levels and professional levels. Income levels are slightly below other major cities, but the cost of living is lower as well.
