Elizabeth, I'm not a realtor or familiar with the market but grew up north of Syracuse on I-81 and went to college in Binghamton so I'm aware of the area. Land in the towns upstate is generally cheap. Email a local realtor to have them pull comps for your all the way up and down I-81, Marathon, Preble, Castle Creek etc, you could go all the way up to Lafayette, Tully, etc since all these towns are basically the same. If you're planning on commuting to Binghamton from Whitney Point its a about a 25-30 min drive depending on where you want to go and mostly highway. Having done a similar drive during the summers, its really a miserable way to commute on a highway. Not sure if you're in more rural Massachusetts and are used to the drive but its not something I could do long term. Hope this helps at least a bit.
