As Linda indicated, this is a life style choice.
At 66 years of age it is possible you want to enjoy your new freedoms and be available to travel more and spend extended time in place like Juneau or San Juan or even a stint in Key West.

Consult with your financial adviser to determine the best use of your resources that will align with your short and long term goals.

A rule of thumb would be if you are staying longer that 5 years, you should buy. Purchase methods and local economy can skew that time line.

My NC Homes Team answered:
The advantages are no mortgage payments and as cash buyers you put yourselves in the strongest possible negotiating position possible. In essence you're paying yourselves a rate of interest equal to whatever the mortgage interest rate would be.

The disadvantages are you pulling retirement money out that you may need at some point in the future and you're losing whatever rate of return it's generating.

Whether this is a good strategy is hard for any one of us who responds to say. We don't know enough about your financial status in specific; nor are the majority of us certified as financial planners, advisers etc. This is something you should be discussing with your financial adviser.

Why choose a town like Belfast for retirement? Have you vacationed up here and love the area? Unless you have spent time in any community that is so different from your current location/home, you could be making a big mistake. Do a taste test first, preferably in the off-season. ... more

Have seen a lot of homes on the water for under $300 in the area from Edgecomb to Wiscasset. It is rare to find an owner finance. Is that a must? Send me your email address and what you are looking for as far as bedroom/bath. I can then set you up on an automatic notification so that whenever something comes on the market you will be immediately notified. ... more

For 23 years I have been a real estate broker in the greater Belfast area. I am the product of the Belfast school system myself and a former guidance counselor at the Belfast Middle School. When I was a child there were neighborhood elementary schools and consolidation began at grade 7 through high school.

Now, Belfast has a beautiful new consolidated elementary school for all neighborhoods on the Belfast harbor side of town and a separate elementary school on the East Side, across the bridge in East Belfast. The middle school is consolidated from all neighborhoods in Belfast and the other seven district towns, grades 6 through 8 and is also a relatively new facility with a fantastic gardening program for the students (

A busy mom with children involved in after school and weekend activities would probably prefer to be located in Belfast itself where car-pooling will ease the transportation burden, although raising children in the other towns of the school district could be the best choice for your children.

I suggest you arrange for visits and tours of a couple of the elementary schools. It will be evident to you which schools share your education goals.
