Verify by making sure you're speaking with the legitimate landlord!

If you've seen a rental on trulia, or any other site, and the price seems almost too good to be true..more than likely it isn't true, and it's a SCAM!!!

If the supposed landlord says he or she can't show you the house in person (or simply that you can't see it in person) RUN in the opposite direction.....it's a scam! Many scammers have creative stories as to why they cannot show you the home (many say they are "out of state" or even go so far as to claim they are missionsaries!!)

Finally, if anyone ever asks you to WIRE MONEY for the keys....it's definitely a scam - do NOT do that!!

To really verify a rental - speak to a local agent!!!!

Mortgage lenders rely on your credit score. With 550 you will not qualify for mortgage home loan, unless you can make large down payment and that will be challenging. You will need to have a high income and steady employment, and definitely you need to start working on repairing you credit.
Good Luck

Annette Lawrence answered:
Yes they can.
However, there are things you can do to prevent this from occurring.
Further guidance would be providing legal advise. Since I am not an attorney, you must consult one to learn how to take preventive action. It is simple. It is easy. It is not expensive.

Chat with your REALTOR and they may be able to direct you to the right resource.

Please be aware, response notification on Trulia is disabled. I will not be aware of any follow-up questions and may not receive an inquiry if you use that 'contact' link. If your need is urgent for a response from me, you will need to CALL.

Best of success,

As Realtors we really can't tell you which area is the nicest, it is the opinion of each person. I have lived in what some consider N. Lindenhurst for 43 years and I love where I am. The best thing for you is to drive around each area of the houses you are considering and decide for yourself. What I consider nice you might not. Any questions please call me anytime 631 433-8567

Frank,

Finding a rental home can be less stressful than you think.

We would be happy to provide you with a FREE service called Listing Book. Listing Book provides every property listed with the Multiple Listing Service.

We will set up an account that you will then own. Simply enter your search criteria and everything that matches your search will be delivered to your account.

If a property that is over your price limit is reduced into your range, you will be immediately notified.
When new properties are listed on the Multiple Listing Service that meet your search requirements, you will be immediately notified.

This service is free to you and does not obligate you to me or any other Realtor; you get to pick with whom you wish to work.

The minimal information we need to get you started is your full name, email address and $ maximum. You will control the rest.

Check http://www.mlsli.com or consider working with an agent; check local print media for by owner rentals, always verify ownership before exchanging any money; word of mouth, etc.
