Few will stop foreclosure due to the time and cost of stopping and starting over if the short sale does not sell. No. It is not required but it is highly advisable. You may want your buying contract to include language that allows you to back out of the deal should there be problems with the property that are discovered during the inspection period.

On the flip side, for the house that I just purchased I chose to not have the home inspected. I used this as a bargaining chip and, as a result, got the house for an AMAZING price. The only reason I opted to not have an inspection was because I was planning on gutting the house and installing a new roof, updating the plumbing, updating the electric, and HVAV system - these are the big things that a home inspection examines. As these were being replaced anyway I found no need to inspect their existing condition.
