It depends.if you are able to keep your home in "show shape" while living in it that's great but if you've got kids, pets etc and lots of stuff it would probably show much better vacant. Discuss this with your Realtor and get their opinion. ... more

If the property is their principle residence, and they've lived in it for at least 2 of the past 5 years... then they (and you) are exempt from capital gains for the first $250,000 in profit (or $500,000 if filing jointly as a married couple)...

That whole capital gains thing is the old rule.
