Northside, Westside, and parts of Southside of Jacksonville are overrun by thugs and drugs from the northside and eastside (downtown) part of town, transplants from Hurricane Katrina, and Ghetto-ville of other southern states (Georgia, South and North Carolina, and Virginia). Unless you're a part of this group, I suggest you move further south closer to Saint Augustine. It's like a Zombie Apocalypse in Jacksonville, Florida and the decent neighborhoods and people are being driven out. ... more

You will need to do your own research regarding quality of schools, crime statistics and what is a "good" neighborhood for your family. Realtors cannot give opinions on these topics because it violates Fair Housing laws. Before you fly down to Jacksonville, you can either call the local police department (not the 911 number - use a local number) or go to their website. The police department can answer questions about safety and crime. As for quality of schools, there are websites for that. You can also call the local schools and ask the Office to have one of the parents contact you. Elementary schools generally have a Parent Teacher organization and those parents will call you. I would also use the information on the Census Bureau's website.

Realtors can provide published information - as long as it's somebody else who wrote it. Being from the New York City suburbs, I suspect the quality of public schools in CT is superior to that of Florida. I know the public schools in Greenwich are far superior. If you're in the Greenwich area, it will be very difficult to find comparable schools.

All I see here are replies by agents wanting to sell you a home. Probably biased.
Be careful. Look up something called the "non disclosure of problems" that comes with a
nocatee purchase contract.

just be careful.

A good real estate agent is very familiar with the neighborhoods where he or she shows properties. But because of the Fair Housing Act, the agent can't legally share all of that information with you. Many customers ask about "safe" neighborhoods but the definition of safe is subjective, your definition of safe may not be the same as another person's, and answering questions about "safe" neighborhoods may actually put us agents in violation of the Fair Housing laws as it may pinpoint a certain class of people. That's why we real estate agents should not be commenting on safe neighborhood questions other than to point you towards local police/sheriff offices for statistics or demographic web sites that track crime statistics such as www.crimemapping.com. ... more

The Peninsula is a secure, high-rise on the St. Johns River that has a concierge service to help navigate the vastness of Duval County. I lived there while in transit to Minneapolis and enjoyed walking to San Marco and across the Main Street Bridge to the Landing to eat shashimi and kimchi soup at Koja's Sushi Bar; Best in Jax! But to answer the question, San Marco and Riverside will be the shortest commute, but St. John's Towncenter has the best offerings for a young professional; shopping, restaurants, rentals, and nightlife. ... more
