It really depends on what you are looking for. I'm assuming you can look at a map and see what is close, I'm also assuming you are asking what is a "good" neighborhood, not "what is close".

1) stay away from Mayport, it's ghetto.
2) The areas off Atlantic blvd over off Girvin, Kernan, San Pablo, or Hodges are all pretty decent. Stay away from anything entitled "regency or arlington" neighborhoods
3) you get what you pay for in this city........if you see a 3 BR house for under $1000 a month, it's in a bad neighborhood, no exceptions.

Many people choose to rent before buying when they're new to the area so they can learn first hand by living here what area or community they would like to buy in. I find that makes sense unless you can do a lot of research online and visit multiple times before moving here so you feel sure enough to buy. It's really up to you what you feel the most comfortable with. I am a real estate agent for We Give Realty, and if you are interested in buying a new construction home, we can help you! When you use We Give Realty as your buyer's agent, we give you . . . #1. our new home buyer's agent representation service for FREE, #2. 2% cash back on your new home purchase which is 2/3 of our typical commission paid to us by the builder. That's a check for $8,000 on a $400,000 new construction home that we give to you! Let me know if we can help you! ... more

Christy Greene answered:
Personally I lived there for years and I would be wary of anything Northwest of Southside & Baymeadows Rd. that especially includes those apartments and conversions off the Southside service road near the community college. Those areas have been overrun with criminal activity, no to low income, and you can watch the trucks after they get full of day laborers from those apartments go straight over to the gate station on that corner and fill up while the day laborers buy convenience foods etc... Also, Baymeadows Circle & Place has become quite depreciated as the golf course the community was built around never got deeded to the community by the builder so when it was shut down it severely impacted the neighborhood. As it would certainly have to impact a neighborhood of golf course backed units that now have a 4 acre empty lot growing weeds through the middle of it. It/those lots are being sold I understand but to business parks/industrial projects not a real boom to the property value. Now there is one area that has fought the general decline fairly well and that is the Lakes. It is right off Southside Blvd. at Baymeadows it has a "service road" too but that road only serves those condos/ homes & no apartment complexes so it functions as more of a private drive. It is a mostly middle to older aged residents that are quiet by nature, and speaking of nature the area is named the lakes because it has lots of natural lakes and protected wildlife is often seen there. However the new stretch of Baymeadows road that is east of Southside Blvd. is still doing fairly well and since it backs up to Deerwood and Gate Parkway which itself connects to Towncenter (the high end mall) this area will likely remain a safe harbor. ... more
