Your best bet is to call the local police who service that area. They will have the crime statistics you need. Sometimes, however, doing some drive-bys at different times of the day on different days of the week will give you a good idea. Do a Google search for crime in that area. Check out spotcrime.com for statistics on crime in that area. There are several homes in that area available for sale that could have a mortgage payment lower than your rent would be at those apartments, though. Why not try to save some money, all while building equity into a home? There are financing programs available to help you get into a home with little to no money down. Feel free to reach out to me.

I will give you a straight answer to this question: Lock up ANYTHING you don't want to be stolen. Get a place with a garage so you can close away your car. Even if your stuff is nailed down, chained up, behind a fence, you have a dog or vigilant neighbors...people will steal your stuff. Even if it isn't valuable (like a rusty old bike that wouldn't even sell for $20, or a Rubbermaid trash can), it doesn't matter - they will steal it from right out under your nose. Move there if you must, but do so with both eyes open and take a very "city," trust-no-one kind of attitude with you. Sad but true...... more
