It is challenging for realtors to answer questions online especially regarding neighborhood safety. This is always subjective. I live in an area of Oakland that some people would call "borderline", but I've been there thirty five years and had few problems. Oakland has a fair amount of crime, and while some neighborhoods are relatively crime free, and others are saturated with crime, most neighborhoods have "some" crime. Finding your own comfort level is the key.
I agree with Antoine in looking at the crime watch map, using the link he provided, and I second his comments. I would definately spend time in whatever neighborhood you are looking at. Go ahead and talk to neighbors, as they will generally give you honest feedback, for better and worse. I would also find out about neighborhood crime watch groups as well as neighborhood block clubs and meetings. You can get this info from the District Council person. In this case, you are talking about District 6, Desley Brooks. Call or email her office and ask about the neighborhood groups, or research on the City Website.. http://www.Oaklandnet.com
