Definitely check with the police department. They are the experts on crime in the area. By law a real estate agent is not permitted to discuss that with you. Also check your local newspapers in that area. Many will print police activity.
Don't forget the second best option is to just walk through the area on a weekend and speak to the neighbors! You'll also get to make some friends in the area you are thinking about making your home!

My suggestion assessing comfort with a location and safety is to check out the area at different times of day on different days of the week AND speak to the professionals that can really comment on safety - the police department. Make that call and compliment it with a few visits to the area - Monday morning will undoubtedly feel different than Friday night when everyone let's their hair down .... you want to see and "feel" it all so you can proceed with eyes wide open.

Good luck to you,

Hi Ilene,

I live right on the bay and it is beautiful. Please give me a call on my SELL phone 609-972-3628 if you would like more information on bay front homes and homes near the bay.

Thanks,

If unfamiliar with area, do revisit more than once and at different times of day, possibly chat with locals/ neighbors; also do contact the local police department with all your questions, hear all there is to hear firsthand; real estate professionals are prohibited from steering, enticing a buyer to purchase, or not, in specific neighborhoods...
