I have seen some homeowners who install their storm shutters before heading north. Depends on the neighborhood, some don't allow shutters up except when warnings are issued. That is also a dead giveaway that no one is home.

Neighbors or a service are the most popular ways of keeping an eye on things.

There are some tech items available that would allow you to monitor with sound and/or video inside the home, accessible by your home computer.

Gated communities sometimes give a false sense of security, and people are more likely to leave doors unlocked etc.... which makes them easier targets than your home with the doors locked.

Motion activated lights and interior lights on timers make it appear someone may be home. You just want to look less appealing, punks want easy targets.

Many snowbirds are buying homes in gated communities for that reason. Or they ask their neighbors (if they know them well enough) to keep an eye on it. There are also watch services available in some areas. Best bet is to talk to the sheriff or look up crime statistics websites. Another way is if interested to rent the home.

Lots of "snowbirds" use a home watch service to check on their Florida property while they are north. Contact the local sheriff dept regarding crime statistics...real estate agents are not allowed to discuss that with you.
