In addition to the police department, you can check any address yourself on several sites. Here are links to 2 of them
Neighorhood scout also has some good information.

You asked a pretty good question and one thats really hard to answer. We live in 75069 and love it, the zip code includes the historical district of McKinney, the historical downtown square and parts of Fairview. Many folks that don't know, work or live in the area will not understand the charm and character it offers. It is a great place to live and to answer your question I feel very safe.

I think the other agents that mentioned to check with the local police crime stats were spot on. That will give you actual numbers and types of crimes. I would also suggest driving the area your interested in, stop and chat with people and try to get a feel the community.

Best of luck in your home shopping.

Safe is a relative term and it depends on what your definition is. If safety is important to you in the general sense check the area you live or want to live in with the police department and they can provide criminal reports. A security system is a must I think as well as proper insurance on your property for financial safety. Some even go as far to get a to buy a gun to protect themselves which is something I have mixed feelings about but lean towards no gun as my personal preference. Overall I feel safe because I lock my doors and know in my general location that a break in or assualt is pretty unlikely.

In just about any city there are places that may appear more safe than others. The best advice I can give anyone is to find a realtor that has worked in the area a significant amount of time and to search the local Police Department websites for statistics of where you are planning to move.
