First ask yourself what is the purpose of the appraisal??? Estate purposes? Divorce? Probate?
If the answers to all the above is no, then you most likely do not need an appraisal.
If you are looking for an idea of what your home is worth, either cause you are thinking of selling or if you just want to know, then I suggest you contact three local and respected real estate agents in your area and get a BPO (brokers price opinion) or a market analysis, both are free and will determine what ready willing and able buyers are paying for similar properties.
I would love to charge you for the appraisal $300 to $500 if it is typical home in the market place. But if its not for one of the 3 above then save your money.
