I have gone to the county in the past its kind of a mess down there.
I am talking about Kings Queens Bronx and New York counties..
I decided to pay a bit extra and hired an expeditor. http://www..fastdeeds.com
I got my deed in several days.
When I lost the copy of my original deed a year ago, I was really frustrated as my bank is requiring me to give them the title before I can refinance my home and I am a busy type of person and I don't have much time to go down in register of deeds or county clerks office, so I went ahead and use http://www.fastdeeds.com and I got my deed without hassle.
DO NOT USE FASTDEEDS - They charge $125 for a free document!!! One of my deeds was $5 for a certified copy, $2 for non-certified. I hear the NYC one I need is free, but it may take a few calls to get it. If your time is worth $1000/hr, then maybe it's worth spending 125 bucks. Good luck.
go to needmydeed.com
its cheap and fast and saves the hassle of going to the county clerks buildings and sitting around all day after you find parking.. they actually do copies of deeds and all title reports cheaper than the county themselves.
What County/borough do you live? all u need is your address or section block and lot / borough block and lot and if u email them ahead of time youll get a better deal! and what every vital land records you need within 24 hours.
Currently when looking to obtain deed copies we use title plants, which are accessible online. Most counties now days scan document images and index them online in county databases. The majority of title companies today have licensed access to these title plants and are able to provide expedited service to their clients. Some of the more rural counties in the US, recorded and index their records on microfilm in which case you would manually retrieve in person or with a local Abstractor. US TITLE RECORDS provides this service to include lien and title searches online and via Abstractor services.
NewYorkDeed.com & NYClandrecords.com is now http://www.needmydeed.com they will obtain your deed and send you a copy via email or fax within hours, then also mail the copies. They have a beat any price guarantee but only service New York
Forget fastdeeds or any other such service. Do not use an expediter. Deeds can be viewed and downloaded immediately for FREE at nyc.gov. Most likely the people suggesting fastdeeds are employees of the company. Don't fall for it. I just downloaded a copy of my deed in PDF format. It took about 5 minutes to find my block/lot number and see the deed.
