A 620 score or higher would be an average score, but keep in mind there are exception for lower scores. For example, some people may have lost a home because of lay off and need to lease a home until they reestablish themselves and save money. Landlords have different qualifications. ... more

I am writing to say that I was lucky enough to find a landlord/owner willing to rent to me in the Homewood area. It is a lovely 4 bdrm, 2 ba home. I was honest and upfront with the owner and explained my financial picture. I did have to divulge quite a bit of financial information to show that I could pay the rent ($2,000) and put down a nice deposit and first months rent, which was a blessing because he could have just turned me away. This was the first home that I looked at and I feel blessed to be living in Homewood. There is even talk of me purchasing the home in the future if I can prove myself an excellent renter. Anyway, I am just hoping that my story gives others hope because I was scared to death when I first posted on this page that I would be homeless in a few months. Having money in the bank and no credit is like being stuck in quick sand. So far the situation is a good fit for me and the landlord. Good luck!!!! ... more

That is going to be difficult in this area. The HF schools carry a larger price tag than other areas. I do have a 4 bed 2 bath home for rent that is 1450 per month, which is low. I have rarely seen anything in the 1300 range in that area for a home. A condo would be doable at that price if you can get a 3 bedroom. They are harder to find. If you are interested in the home I have, we can discuss. There may be other options on a rent to own basis.

Unfortunately, that HF area can command very high rents for homes and section 8 only pays about 40% of the going rate for rentals.

My suggestion is to consider a 3-bedroom apartment or condo. There are several in that school district on Kedzie and 183rd Streets which accept section 8 vouchers. It is not a home, but it is a way to get into that district.

Otherwise, I do know of some other section 8 rentals in the surrounding districts. Please feel free to contact me.

Currently, the lowest rental in Homewood is going for $925/month with an additional $975 security deposit. It is a one bedroom, one bath unit. It will be rather challenging to find a two bedroom for $900 or under. Feel free to contact me at 708-365-9789 if you have any questions. ... more
