is there a set percentage at the beginning of the contract or an agreed upon amount? are there othere costs involved in selling a home?

Whatever percentage you and the Realtor agree to.

The percentage is agreed to when you sign the listing agreement.

Yes, there are other costs involved in selling a home. Your Realtor can give you a pretty good estimate of what those will be. (They vary some, depending on location and regional customs.) They're generally not too much for the seller, though. The buyer usually ends up with a lot more transaction expenses.

Commissions are always negotiable between you and your agent, there are no set standards; if looking to sell, interview in person a few local agents, or as many as needed from different realty companies, then choose the agent you like best and who has the most to offer; choose your agent with care.
