I asked this question of an attorney earlier this year and was told that by law they don't, but it's a nice courtesy if they do

Please tell them! The tenants are usually close to tears when I show up as a buyer agent and tell them I am showing their apartment as the house is for sale. One party had just moved in 2 weeks prior.

If you have a contract then YES! Other than that if there is no rental agreement you shouldnt have to be required to.
But why not tell them so they can move out quicker and be prepared!?!
