With Halloween approaching, are you haunted by some seemingly spooky home maintenance issues?

Now that Fall is going into Winter, it is a good time to solve the mystery of strange household sounds and odors. If something smells like a zombie,
it’s either time to throw out the garbage, or you’d better call Northwestern Energy or your natural gas provider. Natural gas is odorless, but natural gas suppliers add a foul-smelling odorant -- butyl mercaptan — to alert occupants to any leaks. The smell is like rotten eggs. Leaks can occur at your gas-fired water heater, fireplace, clothes dryer, and any gas line. Leaking natural gas is potentially dangerous — leave the house and call your natural gas provider to assess the situation. If you hear mysterious "Footsteps in the Attic," it could be a raccoon or a good-size squirrel on your roof, attempting to find refuge in your attic. Make sure your soffit, rafter, and gable roof vents are covered with screens and trim branches that provide these critters easy access. Thanks to John Riha for these helpful tips!
