How can I find out what bank owns/holds mortgage to a house?

You can check the recorder's office in the county the property is located although if the loan was sold (and except for credit union loans) nearly every loan is sold and sold multiple times it is next to imposible to determine who the current servicing company is.

Mr. Thomas' answer is correct regarding the lender disclosing any information unless you have an interest in the property. Privacy laws will forbid them from speaking to anyone without written authorization.

This information probably will do you no good:
The Banks tend to play their cards very close to the vest.
They won't disclose any information to someone who is not named on the loan.
I tried to intercede for a friend; and got nowhere until he wrote a letter authorizing me.
If the property is not LISTED, you will just have to wait until it is.
If it is LISTED, the bank expects you to communicate through their Realtor.
