The overwhelming majority of our clients choose not to have earthquake insurance because of much higher premium costs and deductibles.

For my own properties we choose to spend the extra money we would on insurance on seismic upgrading instead.

Philip:

As a realtor, you are most likely that only about 10% of homeowners in the Bay Area have earthquake insurance. There are many reasons for that:

• Extremely high cost
• Extremely high deductible
• Most people believe FEMA would step in and provide low cost loans
