As an addition to my previous post, what is also good to know about Old Town is that those streets that run from east (i.e., the Potomac River) to west are also sequentially numbered in blocks of 100. For example, the first block off the river is the 0-100 block; the second block off the river is the 100-200 block; etc. As such, it is easy to quickly determine: exactly how many blocks you are from the river; and whether you are moving east or west.

In a way, Old Town has had its' own built-in GPS system since the mid-1600's.

All Old Town streets that begin at King. St. and run north are designated with an "N". For example: N. Union St.; N. Lee St.; etc. Those that begin at King St. and run south are designated with an "S". For example: S. Union St.; S. Lee St.; etc.

House numbering for both "N" & "S" streets begins at King St., with each block being numbered in sequences of 100. For example: the first block off King St. is the 0-100 block; the second block off King is the 100-200 block; etc. So in Old Town, it is always easy to tell: whether you are north or south of King. St.; exactly how many blocks you are off King St.; and whether you are moving either north or south.

On King Street, if you are facing the water, the North part is on your left and the South on your right. King Street separates the North from the South of Old Town.

If you are standing at the Masonic Temple looking towards the water in Old Town Alexandria the street that changes it from North to South is King St. On the left of King St. if you are facing the water (so the Masonic Temple is behind you) is North and on the right going toward Ft. Belvoir is South.

North Old Town refers to the streets Bashford, Slaters, Powhatan, all of the streets in Potomac Greens. Basically streets that fall outside of and north of the four quadrants that compose Old Town. King Street divides the city north and south and Washington Street divides it east and west. Hope this helps. Dianna
